The Visit to the Museum
Book project for Vladimir Nabokov’s short story "The Visit to the Museum”. The story is centred on the anonymous protagonist's quest to find a friend's family painting in a small town's dusty museum. As the protagonist finds himself immersed in this quest, strange and unsettling things begin to happen around him. In this kaleidoscopic vertigo, he finds more about himself than he would like to.
The challenge with this series was the transfer of vector synthetic drawings into the material world, mixing laser cutters with paint. The balance between the digital polished compositions and the analog texture and pigment vibrance was what I was after. Using laser paper cuts helped me to play around more intuitively. Having multiple identical paper forms allowed me to move things around like I was solving a puzzle.
Illustrations and book design laser cut paper, presentation board, printing inks and color pencils. Book Cover type laser engraved, Cover Illustration laser cut and assembled presentation board.
Project done at the School of Visual Arts under Viktor Koen’s guidance. Produced at Visual Futures Lab, SVA.
